Because not all chemical treatments for carpets work in the same way, not all of them are going to have the ability to kill the live adult fleas which may be living within the fibers of your carpet. Boric acid powder as well as food grade diatomaceous are both safe and effective ways to kill live fleas in the carpet and help prevent a flea infestation from occurring. While both methods are highly effective at treating live fleas in carpet, they both work in very different ways to eliminate and control live fleas in the carpet within your home.
The main difference between the two types of live flea treatments is that one contains chemicals, and the other does not. However, if you opt for the natural option you will need to reapply the product more often. Food grade diatomaceous typically is the most effective within the first 72 hours of treatment, whereas carpet powder which contains boric acid is known to kill live adult fleas in the carpet for up to a full year with a single treatment. So, if you are looking for a natural chemical free option for treating live fleas in the carpet then diatomaceous is a great option. However, if you want something that is going to work consistently for a long period of time then you may want to go with a boric acid powder.
Food grade diatomaceous is created from natural organic substances which are made from fossils and water plants which contain calcium, sodium, magnesium and silicon. This fine powder is similar in looks to talcum powder, and is effective at killing live fleas in carpet. This fine substance actually contains microscopic sharp edges which are able to penetrate the body of the fleas and then dry out the waxy outside layer of the fleas which causes them to dehydrate and die off. This product is even safe enough to be used on pets, in pet bedding and in outside areas where pets spend a lot of time. You can also apply this powder to the entryways of your home such as windows and doorways to help prevent fleas from entering your home. Make sure that the product you choose uses food grade diatomaceous because this is safer for both pets and humans.
Boric acid is another effective treatment method for eliminating live fleas within carpet. This inexpensive powder whichis also referred to as borax is able to remove the moisture from the fleas’ body and cause dehydration and death almost immediately. This powder is highly effective even in small amounts and will last for a long time making it a popular choice for many carpet treatments which are marketed for the elimination of live fleas. One of the best things about Boric acid powder is that it is not a repellant which allows live fleas to continue to return to the treated area and effectively continue killing off live fleas within the carpet as soon as they enter.
Before applying either one of these flea control methods for live fleas in the carpet it is recommended that everything be removed from the room and that the area is thoroughly vacuumed to remove any loose fleas, eggs or larvae which may be present. Once this has been completed, simple sprinkle one of these two powders onto the affected carpet and use a broom to work the powder deep down into the fibers of the carpet where it can reach fleas which are hiding within small cracks and crevices.
