Fleas can often be found in carpets along with flea eggs and immature larvae which may be resistant to some chemical treatments. For this reason it may be necessary to use more than one treatment method when treating carpets in your home to ensure that you are able to eliminate adult fleas, live larvae and prevent eggs from hatching and maturing into adult fleas. It is also a good idea when treating carpet for fleas to move all furniture from within the room so that you can be sure that fleas are not hiding under or behind furniture in the room. It is best to move all furniture and then vacuum the area thoroughly before applying carpet treatments.
There are a few different chemicals which are known to effectively eliminate and control fleas within carpet. Sprays which contain permethrin or pyrethrums are a great way to help prevent flea eggs from hatching and flea larvae from maturing due to the chemical Methoprene which is known to inhibit the growth of these tiny pests. When applying these sprays to your carpet make sure that all small cracks and crevices where flea eggs and larvae may hide are thoroughly treated. While these chemical carpet sprays may be effective at controlling the growth of immature fleas throughout the early stages of their life cycle, it is unable to eliminate adult fleas; for this reason it is essential that you combine treatments so that the adults are also effectively eliminated.
Frequent vacuuming is also recommended to ensure that the flea eggs and larvae are removed from the rug. You want to make sure that the vacuum bag is immediately taken outside and emptied after each vacuuming to ensure that the fleas are not able to reproduce within the bag and lead to further fleas hatching and multiplying. Boric acid powders are another treatment option for fleas in carpets; however, they must be used in moderation because they can be harmful to both people and pets. Once the powder has been applied, you then want to work it down into the carpet so that it can penetrate deep into the carpet fibers. Allow the powder to sit on the carpet for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer, than follow a regular vacuuming routine to extract dead fleas, eggs and larvae from the carpet.
Food grade diatomaceous is another option for treating fleas in carpet that is safe to both people and pets, yet effectively able to treat and control fleas. Diatomaceous is made from particles of finely crushed marine fossils which are able to use sharp edges to penetrate the bodies of the fleas and then absorb the fleas’ moisture from the body therefore dehydrating and killing the flea. These sharp surfaces are safe for children, pets and people, yet are able to effectively kill off adult fleas within the carpet in your home. This safe and effective treatment can also be used on pet bedding, on pets and in other areas where your pet spends the most time and fleas are prevalent.
