There
are a variety of flea control products on the market which use a many different
chemicals to treat and control flea infestation both in the home and on your
pet. When using chemical treatments it is crucial that you read the directions thoroughly
and follow them precisely in order to prevent over exposure of these chemicals
to your pet, yourself or your family. Also, you need to make sure that the
chemical treatment which you choose is designed for the type of pet that you
have. Some chemicals which are effective at treating fleas in dogs are not safe
to use in cats and vice versa; therefore, make sure that you use products
specifically designed for the type of pet which you own.
One method for eliminating and controlling
fleas is a chemical insecticidal soap which is able to effectively eliminate
the live fleas living on the animal. Limonene and linalool are both great
ingredients which are used in flea treatments shampoos and sprays and are known
to effectively treat adult fleas as well as the flea eggs and larvae which may
be hiding within the pet’s fur. These chemicals although very safe for both
animals and humans are highly toxic to fleas.
Another common chemical ingredient which is known to help eliminate
fleas is pyrethrum; however, this chemical can be harmful to humans and is
shown to increase the risk of cancer. When using this harsh chemical it is
imperative that you follow the manufacturer’s directions precisely to avoid
over exposure to you or your pet.
Methoprene is a chemical component which
is great at helping to control the spread of fleas due to its ability to
disrupt the growth process of fleas and prevent immature larvae from growing
into adult fleas. Methoprene is also able to help prevent eggs from hatching
and forming larvae. Keep in mind that this chemical is effective for disrupting
the life cycle of the fleas and controlling the growth of these tiny pests it
is unable to kill adult fleas. For this reason, if you use a product which
contains Methoprene it is important that you also use another method to treat
and eliminate the adult fleas as well.
Fipronil, lufenuron and Imidacloprid are
both chemicals which are used in products such as Frontline which is applied to
the skin at the base of the animals’ neck and downward towards the shoulder
blades. The good thing about these chemicals is that there use is restricted
and targeted to a specific area which minimalizes exposure to people in the
home. These chemicals are able to kill the fleas which come in contact with
your pet. However, if you have a flea problem it is essential that you also use
other measures to kill any flea eggs or larvae which may remain on the pet or
within your home. With so many effective flea treatments out there it may be
necessary to use a variety of different chemical products to effectively
eliminate and control fleas.
